BigMove transports boilers for the Bochum energy provider unique Wärme

Hamburg – January 17, 2018 – With the transport of three district heating boilers for a cogeneration plant in Bochum, BigMove has once again proven its competence in all areas of heavy load logistics. In just 16 days, the units, each weighing 100 tonnes, were transported from the central Franconian town of Gunzenhausen to the Ruhr area. The approximately 500-kilometer route was mastered alternately with special vehicles and by barge. The big challenge here: the loading of the heavy containers on the different modes of transport.

The cylindrical boilers from the Bosch factory in Gunzenhausen were first transported by heavy-duty truck to the inland port of Nuremberg-Roth. There they were loaded onto a barge using a 500-ton telecrane. Via the Main-Danube Canal, the Main, the Rhine and the Rhine-Herne Canal, we went to Dortmund. Only after a suitable transshipment point for heavy goods had been found, the heavy cargo could be brought by road transport to the destination to Bochum. Because of the dimensions and weight of the heat boiler, traffic lights and traffic signs were dismantled on the route. Due to the local situation of the new cogeneration plant, the boilers could not be delivered directly. Therefore, the transport took place in the last two kilometers with smaller special vehicles. The unloading again took over a 500-ton telescope. With the help of special equipment, the three heat boilers were finally pushed onto the foundation.

“The special thing about this assignment was to coordinate the combination of the individual modes of transport,” explains Olaf Beckedorf, CEO of BigMove AG. “In particular, the local conditions have demanded an in-depth planning of the transport.” BigMove has created the conditions for this because of its network and proven its efficiency.

At the location of the energy supplier unique Wärme on the site of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the three new boilers will supply the campus and part of the southern city area with district heating.
