Ferry To Austria

Gustav Seeland drives a ship over the highway

Hamburg – 06.11.2019 – An unusual order is occupied by Gustav Seeland GmbH. An 85-meter ferry has to be brought from the Port of Hamburg to the Austrian town of Fussach – across the street. The heavy goods vehicles of the Hamburg heavy goods logistics company will roll over the roads into the Alpine region 17 times. The order poses major challenges for the specialists in terms of type and size.

In order to transport the ferry to its destination, it is split into 17 parts at the Pella Sietas shipyard in Hamburg. The 14 meter long, 5 meter wide and 4 meter high ship sections are then loaded onto the special vehicles by crane. On the low loaders, the 35-ton elements are transported within three nights from Hamburg via Hanover, Magdeburg, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Munich and Memmingen to Fußach. At the local shipyard, they are then reassembled into a ship. The ferry will be used after its completion as the first LNG ship on Lake Constance.

The heavy transports with a total weight of nearly 70 tons each are carried out in November, December and January. Due to the large weight and the oversize, all 17 transports are secured and accompanied by the police or by BF3 vehicles. Comprehensive preparation measures had to be taken for transport over smaller roads and paths. In the Lake Constance region, for example, numerous traffic signs and street lamps have to be removed and street trees must be pruned. In order to facilitate transport, green and open spaces are also rented and kept free.

“The route planning for this major order already presented us with special challenges. On the route are currently many construction sites, which must be avoided because of the excess width of the transports. There are only a few roads and paths in the Lake Constance area that allow heavy transports of this kind. It had to be found, “says Johann Evers, Managing Director Gustav Seeland GmbH, describing the situation.
