Challenge for Heavy Lift Specialists

Hegmann Transit brings a ship via road transport

Sonsbeck, August 4th, 2022. The North Rhine-Westphalian BigMove partner Hegmann Transit has completed an operation that is not quite day-to-day. The order: to bring a new passenger ship from Wesel am Rhein to Haltern am See. Since the local reservoir cannot be reached by water, the only way to get there was by road. The transport of the passenger ship, which is around 36 meters long, 8 meters wide and weighs almost 125 tons, required maximum precision and presented the BigMove partner with particular challenges.

The starting point for the complex order was Wesel. The 15 tonne housing of the upper deck was dismantled in the Niederrhein heavy-duty terminal and loaded onto a special vehicle for onward transport to Haltern. Under its own power, the passenger ship “Möwe” continued on the Wesel-Datteln Canal in the direction of Haltern – due to flat bridges without the previously removed deck structures.

The BigMove partner then faced the real challenge near the destination: the ship had to be lifted out of the water onto road transporters using a floating crane at a bridge and brought to the shore of the reservoir. Arrived at the reservoir, the “Möwe” was then lowered back into the water with two special cranes in tandem lift and the deck structures were reassembled. The dimensions and weight of the purely electrically operated and therefore particularly heavy passenger ship required absolute know-how and the highest precision.

In the future, the “Möwe” will connect three stops at the Haltern reservoir and be used for excursions. It is already considered a tourist attraction in the region.

Hegmann Transit and BigMove are more than satisfied to be able to cope with such complex tasks and to always be able to offer suitable transport services.

The authorized signatory of Hegmann Transit, David Tietz, is proud: “The precise planning and the interaction of all parties involved have made the highly complex project a success.” Olaf Beckedorf, CEO of BigMove AG, sees such projects as proof that the professional planning and implementation of unusual transport orders can be represented through the BigMove network.
