Big Challenge for gustav Seeland

The heavy goods logistics specialist assembles a new bridge in the center of Hamburg

Hamburg – September 18, 2018 – Gustav Seeland will install the new Marion-Gräfin-Dönhoff-Brücke over the Alsterfleet in the city center of Hamburg. In the future, the 32-meter-long pedestrian bridge will connect the Alsterarkaden with the new office and commercial building “Alter Wall Hamburg”. Covering an area of around 18,000 square meters, it is home to numerous shops and restaurants. In addition, the Bucerius Kunst Forum will occupy rooms in the former bank building.

After months of preparations, the new pedestrian bridge will be installed later this week, under the direction of Gustav Seeland. The heavy-load specialist is responsible for the transport of the steel construction to Hamburg in Hessisch Lichtenau as well as for the lifting in the heart of the Hanseatic city.

The 32-meter-long and 70-ton bridge element will initially be transported by road to an interim storage facility in the Port of Hamburg. From there it then goes on floating pontoons through the Alsterfleet to the future location. In this case, the tow band must pass several obstacles, such as the Adolphsbrücke – which is only possible with artificially lowered water level. Using special lifting devices and a telescopic crane, the bridge is turned on site and accurately lifted. The turning, the lifting on the water and a narrow time window represent a special challenge for the specialists of Gustav Seeland.

“Such a highly complex job requires a long planning, a precise coordination and the professional implementation of all processes”, says Johann Evers, Managing Director Gustav Seeland. “Such a project is also a big challenge for us as a specialist in heavy transport”.

The new pedestrian bridge will be transported from the port to its future location during the night of Tuesday. The item is scheduled for Wednesday morning. The assembly work for the future Marion-Gräfin-Dönhoff-Brücke should be completed by noon.
